Abstract:
Chitosan is an important chemical substance which is derived from chitin. The main sources of chitin and chitosan are the crustaceans (shrimp, prawn, lobster and crawfish). Chitin and chitosan were obtained from prawn shell (head, body and claws) wastes through two different improved methods, expressed as method A and method B. Both methods were completed with three chemical processes, named as demineralization (to remove minerals from dried sample). deproteinization (to remove proteins) and deacetylation (degree of deacetylation evaluate the purity of chitosan). Temperature is an important factor in the production of chitosan from dried prawn shell which is applied in the method B. Method A is more time consuming than method B. There were variation of duration, color and yield in the method A and method B for the production of chitosan from prawn shell. There were three different samples of dried prawn shell, expressed as A, B and C in the two different methods. The purity of chitosan was tested by the ash content, moisture content, solubility test and biuret test. The percentages of chitosan yield was 23.8±0.08% from sub-sample As in the method B and it was higher than the other samples. From the method A, chitosan was obtained about 21.8±0.15% from sub-sample A2. Comparatively method B is beneficial to increase the economy rate of Bangladesh. The total prawn production waste a huge amount of by-products of approximately 27-32 mt. From the by-products of total prawn production in Bangladesh can be earned about almost 44-52 million USS annually and it is a huge amount of economic loss for Bangladesh. This study shows that the quantification of total by-products from prawn production have to be measured and utilized it properly. From these by-products Bangladesh can be carned a huge amount of economy if there will be established chitosan production industry in Bangladesh it will be totally economic development.
