Abstract:
The present study assessed livelihood status of the Hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) fishermen of the Chairman ghat in Hatiya sub-district under Noakhali district. For this study, data were collected from October 2019 to March 2020. Pertinent data were collected from randomly selected 50 Hilsa fishermen by personal interviewing with a semi-structured questionnaire, focus group discussion, and crosscheck interviews with key informants. Results revealed that 38% fishermen had Hilsa fishing experience of bellow 10 years. About 71% fishermen were found professional engaged for fishing all the year round and rest of them (29%) was seasonal fishermen. About half of the fishermen were in young stage of their life (20-30 years old). About 58% fishers had medium families with 5-8 members lest 30% and 12% had large and small families. About 42% fishermen completed primary education while 34% fishermen were incomplete primary education; 20% were illiterate and only 4% fishermen completed their secondary education, respectively. About 56% fishermen used katcha, 34% used pucca and 10% used open place. About 40% fishermen became self sufficient who did not need financial help but 24% borrowed money from their neighbors and relatives and 36% from NGO’s. Average annual incomes of most of them were ranged from BDT. 100,000 to 150,000 (40%) and 12% had above BDT. 180,000. Fishermen faced natural calamities like cyclone, storm, flood and piracy in Chairman ghat. According to fishermen of chairmen ghat, the government does not provide sufficient amount of supports for the betterment of their livelihood. The fishers need soft term institutional credit and requisite training for development of their capability to sustain their livelihood practices.
